What is the process when installing solar on Nantucket?

1. SunWInd will conduct an energy study of your property and show a layout of solar panels on
the property that will meet town guidelines.

2. SunWind will provide you with a proposal that is clear, concise and transparent showing the
materials to be used, detailed scope of work, cost and incentives in order for you to consider.

3. SunWind will submit the Nantucket HDC application as your representative and work with the
HDC board to see your project is approved.

4. Once your solar project is approved by HDC we will submit the building permit application as
well as the interconnection application with National Grid.

5. Upon receipt of the building permit SunWInd will coordinate an installation start date.

6. Install the solar system, complete all required inspections and familiarize the client with the
new solar system.

7. If the project is eligible for the Nantucket Solar Rebate SunWind will assist with documents that
are required for the rebate approval process.

8. Lastly, SunWind will set up other incentive programs that may be available.

From start to finish the process may take 4-5 moths, much of which is permitting and documentation.
The onsite portion of the solar installation typically takes 1 week +/-

Town of Nantucket
Stimulating Ownership & Local Adoption of Renewables
(SOLAR) Rebate Program

In July 2017, the Town of Nantucket launched a "first-of-its-kind" local solar rebate program intended to stimulate the adoption of solar energy systems on primary, residential properties located on Nantucket. Rebates of up to $6,000 are provided to cover a portion of the costs of successfully-installed solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, making ownership more affordable for local residents.

This program is intended to provide a number of key community benefits:

  • To increase the capacity and affordability of residential solar energy systems on Nantucket

  • To boost the amount of green power provided by the Nantucket PowerChoice aggregation program utilizing local renewable energy sources

  • To reduce expensive capacity charges, thus electric prices for all aggregation program participants

  • To decrease summer peak load, helping to defer the need for a costly 3rd undersea transmission cable; an investment historically paid for by Nantucket ratepayers

  • To improve local electric grid resiliency and reliability

  • To reduce local dependence on traditional fossil fuel generation, thereby lessening the island’s carbon footprint and improving air quality

The Solar Rebate Program is funded through an extra 1/10th ¢ per kilowatt hour (kWh) charge that is included in the Nantucket PowerChoice supply rate. The solar "adder" equates to 80¢ per-month for an average resident using 800kWh/month.
