How Solar Photovoltaics Work

The word photovoltaic is the Greek word meaning light and power. Photovoltaics is the process of converting light directly into electricity. This is done using positive and negatively charged particles and a semi conductor material. When the sunlight is absorbed throuhoutt the semiconductor the particles are excited and begin to move, this creates a magnetic field and the energy is released.

A solar panel begins with the production of a cell, the cell is doped with positively and negatively charged particles. Rows of cells are placed onto a panel and connected in series. A solar module or panel is manufactured by connecting the rows of cells, the cells then sealed between a reflective backing material and a sheet of tempered glass and sealed to prevent corrosion.

A solar array consists of multiple panels or modules connected in series or in parallel to produce the desired current and voltage. The power produced by a solar array is Direct Current and is converted to Alternating Current in order to be used in conjunction with existing electrical service.
